Costa Rica Wildlife

While visiting Costa Rica we were introduced to some of their wildlife.  Some wildlife was friendly and wanted to hang around us while some other kinds we had to seek out.

This little guy, actually he was not real little, roamed around the pool.  We really have no idea of what he was.  He had the long nose of an anteater, the body of a raccoon and a long tail like a cat.  They were furry and were bigger than a full size cat.  These things would hang around the pool area, sneak away with people's food and tip over beer cups just to drink it.  They were not afraid of people.  One almost climbed up into my dad's lap just to get his banana.

While I was taking pictures of the wedding this guy was sitting contently in the grass wanting his picture taken too.  He was one of the bigger lizards that we saw.  When I say the Geico lizard does that mean anything to you?  The real green, small lizard?  We saw lots of those little things but they were too quick to get a picture of.

Since Costa Rica was two hours behind us we still pretty much operated on Indiana time.  The sunrise was usually about 5:30 (7:30 Indy time) so we were always on the beach to see it.  The tide was always really low in the morning so we were able to walk the rocks out midway through the peninsula.  This one morning we found lots of sea urchins.  I do not know alot about sea urchins but I'm guessing the one on the left was more of an adult while the ones on the right are more babies.  All the purple blobs are sea urchins.  We found a couple of areas that had hundreds just sitting around.  At the resort their was a gentleman who stepped on one while swimming in the ocean.  Lets just say you do NOT want to step on these things.  Saying that they hurt is not even close to doing it justice.

Since we were out so early we shared the coastline with these two.  You could see these two flipping their fins at one another.  It's almost like they were playing with each other.  One morning they were so close to us that we were able to get great pictures.  We did stay far enough away so there tentacle did not sting us.  These two guys were pretty large.  I just love their design.  They were so cool!

There was a mama and baby Beluga whale migrating through the peninsula.  Sarah was out one morning (before we got there) and was sitting then started seeing them spout out water.  After talking with some of the resort workers we figured out what it was.  The whales were spotted again one afternoon.  I missed seeing them all together, I was kind of bummed about that.

Also, in the mornings, we could see schools of fish jumping around.  We were told that these were schools of Mackerel jumping around because they were being hunted by Tuna.  It was fun to watch these little guys go crazy.

One morning while out walking I found a hug conk shell.  It was sitting in a pool of water on the rocks and still had a huge mussel living in it.  I cleaned it up and brought it back up to the resort with me.  I was so excited to bring it home to the kids.  However, the shell did not make it too far.  Someone stole it from underneath my pool chair.  I was not even able to get a picture of it.  I was so bummed.
